In order to become Lyft drivers, applicants must be at least 21 years of age, have clean driving records, own iOS or Android smartphones capable of running the most current Lyft app and be licensed to drive for at least one year prior to applying. Drivers must hold licenses and registrations in the states in which they wish to operate as Lyft drivers. They must also have in-state insurance policies in their own names.

Lyft requires drivers to use vehicles that have at least four working doors and five working seat belts. The company also requires that vehicles be model year 2003 or newer, though some jurisdictions require a newer vehicle. Lyft also requires that tires have sufficient treads, and that windshields are free of any large cracks or cracks that will affect the driver's ability to view the road properly. Wipers, horns and lights must all be in working condition, air conditioning and heat must be functioning properly and tailpipes must meet emissions requirements in the applicant's state.
