Beacon Payroll fuses three antiquated payroll systems used by the state of North Carolina into a single web-based self-service payroll system administered by the state. As of 2015, North Carolina uses Beacon Payroll technology to ensure that its 85,000 employees are paid in an accurate and timely manner.
Beacon Payroll provides a reliable system to meet payroll needs for an organization as large as the North Carolina state government. It does this by centralizing the payroll computing needs of the state into a single server system that employees and their managers can access through the Internet. This allows employees and managers to log into the web portal to communicate payroll-related information efficiently, such as in the case of a leave of absence request.
The Office of the State Controller describes Beacon Payroll as an enterprise-level employee access portal. The technical infrastructure of Beacon Payroll was implemented between the years of 2006 and 2008, with the objective of making future innovation and scalability possible. The North Carolina state organizations that worked together to ensure seamless integration of Beacon Payroll were the Office of the State Controller, the Office of State Budget and Management, the Office of State Personnel, Information Technology Services, and the Department of Transportation.
