Bayer produces a large number of products across two broad categories -- health care and agriculture -- which include products such as Aleve, Alka-Seltzer, Yaz and Advantix. Under the health care category, Bayer produces medicinal products for both human and animal applications. Its agricultural products include seeds, fungicides, herbicides and seed treatments.
Bayer was initially founded in 1893 by Friedrich Bayer and Johann Friedrich Weskott as a dye manufacturing company. Today, Bayer is best known for its broad range of consumer healthcare products including a number of household pain relievers, cold medicines and similar products. The company's U.S. headquarters are in the San Francisco Bay area.
Bayer also manufactures a number of prescription drugs. As of the end of 2014, Xarelto, Kogenate and Betaferon topped Bayer's prescription drug sales. In addition to these prescription drugs, Bayer also produces various pieces of medical equipment such as blood glucose monitoring systems, including Countour and Breeze 2, as well as a range of diagnostic imaging products capable of x-rays contrast scans, magnetic resonance image and other functions.
Products for animal use include both companion animal applications as well as farm animal usage. These range from anti-flea and tick medicines for domestic animals to anti-parasitic medications for farm animals. Finally, Bayer's best selling agricultural products include herbicides Adengo, Atlantis and Basta as well as the Bayer Garden line of consumer gardening products.
