Genesis Health Ventures was established in 1985 when Michael R. Walker acquired several health centers. Though the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2000, it recovered through a massive reorganization in 2001. Genesis HealthCare operates more than 500 facilities in 34 states, as of August 2015.
