Chartway Federal Credit Union is the one of the largest credit unions in the county and serves more than 212,000 members in eight states, as of 2015. Chartway reportedly has assets of more than $1.9 billion.
Chartway traces its history back to Sep. 4, 1959, when seven civilian workers at the Norfolk Naval Air Station incorporated the NorVA N.A.S. Federal Credit Union. The membership of NorVA N.A.S. was open to civilian and military personnel, along with their family members as well as employees of the credit union and their families. In 1996 the name of the credit union changed to Chartway due to a series of expansions that created a base of members no longer in line with the original mission of NorVA N.A.S.
