How Does a Bale Bed Work?

The specific operation of a bale bed depends upon the model; however, most bale beds work by hydraulically lifting, transporting and dumping large bales of hay. Bale beds are usually designed to fit on the backs of pickup trucks, where they aid farmers and ranchers in feeding large numbers of livestock over long distances. Drivers can operate some models remotely from inside the trucks.

Cannonball bale beds are built of steel to fit most pickup truck beds. They have hydraulic dump features to enable the driver to easily empty the bed's contents; this feature can be remotely controlled. The driver maneuvers the squeeze cylinders of the hydraulic arm around a large hay bale. These cylinders pinch the bale until it is gripped securely, and then the arm lifts the hay onto the bed. Cannonball bale beds can transport cube-shaped or round bales.

To unload the hay, the arm lowers the bale toward the ground and unravels it while the truck remains in motion. This enables farmers and ranchers to spread hay evenly across the ground. The arm locks into place during transport, which keeps the loaded bales secure. The Cannonball's safety features include additional safety locks and switches and a bolt system that enables users to attach or remove it easily.

Triple C's HydraBed system is also powered by hydraulics. The bale handling assembly is made up of a wall rear cross tube that rotates on two hinge assemblies. Operators may choose a wireless remote control, an in-cab control panel or a corded pendant control to operate the assembly. DewEze bale beds engage parallel hydraulic arms to squeeze and lift hay bales for transport.
