Taxpayers can obtain their balance due amounts from the Internal Revenue Service by calling the IRS Tax Help Line at 800-829-1040, the IRS website notes. The IRS help line provides information about prior-year tax returns and any balances due the IRS. This hotline is for individuals who submit a Form 1040 return. Corporations, trusts, small businesses and partnerships use a separate hotline at 800-829-4933 for information on prior returns or balances due.
The individual Tax Help Line also can provide the amount of the original debt owed and the total amount of interest charges and penalties assessed against the unpaid balance due, the IRS explains. The service agent on the help can assist taxpayers in making a payment toward an outstanding debt. The business hotline provides business filers with similar assistance.
Taxpayers who are having trouble paying outstanding taxes may qualify for an installment payment plan, Turbo Tax explains. Taxpayers can apply for a plan online or over the phone. The IRS generally works with taxpayers who want to pay via installments, helping them determine an affordable monthly payment. If a taxpayer can pay the debt off within 120 days, there is no fee to set up an installment plan. Otherwise, the IRS charges a set-up fee for an installment plan.
