What Is the Average-Size Home for a Family of Four?

The average-size home for a family of four is 2,600 square feet. Home sizes have increased since the housing bubble, when the average size home was 2,400 square feet, according to CNN Money.

Since 2005, the market for smaller homes that are 1,400 feet or less has decreased to less than 4 percent of all homes built. The construction of extremely large homes is also on the rise and accounts for more than 9 percent of homes built as of 2013, notes CNN Money. Mega homes only accounted for 6.6 percent of home building inventories in 2005.

Houses that are classified as smaller mansions, those between 3,000 and 4,000 square feet, comprised 21.7 percent of all new homes built as of 2013, adds CNN Money. Houses not only have bigger square footage, but they include more rooms such as a home office, a playroom, a den or a family room over a garage, as well as more bedrooms.
