As of 2015, the federal government employs more than two million civilian workers across a vast conglomeration of agencies located throughout the United States. According to the CATO Institute, on average, federal workers in 2014 earned 78 percent more than workers in the private sector and 43 percent more than state and local government workers. This reflects a trend since the 1990s that saw federal workers compensation grow faster than their private sector counterparts.
