The average salary of a chief executive officer, or CEO, was $178,400 per year as of May 2013, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, or BLS. Ten percent of CEOs made at or below $75,030 per year and the median salary was $171,610 per year.
There was a lot of variance in CEO pay based on state or location. The highest average pay was in Delaware, though the BLS doesn't identify a specific salary. Connecticut had the second-highest state average for CEOs as of May 2013 at $211,850 per year. Rhode Island was third at $209,240. North Carolina was fourth at $205,970 per year, followed by Massachusetts at $201,970.
