CoServ was established in 1937 as a not-for-profit organization. The initial name of the CoServ was Denton Electric Co-operative and established its headquarters at Corinth, Texas. In 1998, Denton Electric Co-operative became Co-operative Services, which is shortened as CoServ. During the late 1990s, CoServ electric ventured into other businesses such as telephone services and home security. However, the reorganization in the year 2002 made the company return to its original services of providing electricity and gas to its customers.
The ownership of the company belongs to members, who pay a refundable membership fee of $15 upon joining. The members must comply with rules and regulations adopted the CoServ board of directors. Moreover, members should not hold more than one membership, except those who need multiple meters.
