Apply for Medicare benefits online by filling out an application at SSA.gov, reports the Social Security Administration. You can complete the process and send the application off in under 10 minutes. Even if you do not intend to initiate Social Security benefits, you should enroll in Medicare within three months of your 65th birthday to avoid paying higher premiums later unless you qualify for a special enrollment period.
To apply for Medicare benefits online, go to the SSA.gov main page, select Benefits in the toolbar at the top of the page, and click on Apply Online for Medicare Only. For most applicants, Medicare Part A hospital insurance is free, and you have the option to sign up and pay a premium for Medicare Part B medical insurance. If you do not sign up for Part B when you first become eligible, the premiums permanently increase by 10 percent for every year that you don't sign up, notes the Social Security Administration.
The online application allows you to pause, save your information and complete it later, states the Social Security Administration. Once you submit the application, you receive a receipt for your records. Use the confirmation number to check your application status anytime. You receive your decision letter and Medicare card by mail.
