The major requirements for teachers are a higher education degree, most commonly a bachelor's degree or master's degree, and a teaching certificate for the state in which the teacher plans to work. Teachers of secondary education subjects also need a formal education in their preferred subject.
During the course of their degree program, prospective teachers are required to complete student teaching. This allows them to gain valuable hands-on experience in the classroom and learn from an established teacher. For college graduates that did not major in education, programs are available to obtain certification. Once certification is completed graduates are eligible for a teaching license.
