The application letter format and content are important because the letter is the introduction of the applicant to the company. The letter has traditional fonts, such as Times New Roman, and a font size between 10 and 12 points. It begins with a header that contains the applicant's contact information first in an address block, followed by the date of the letter and the employer's contact information in another address block, all aligned to the left of the page. The salutation is formal, such as "To Whom It May Concern:" or "Dear Mr. Smith" if the name of the hiring manager is known.
The body of the letter begins with an introduction that includes the title of the position to which the person is applying and how he heard of the job. The applicant lists the relevant skills and experience he possesses that match the job description for which the company advertised. The second paragraph contains the person's statement of interest and why he believes he is a strong candidate based on his qualifications. The final paragraph requests an interview or phone call to follow up on the application and available times for contact.
