What Is an Andrologist?

An andrologist is a physician who specializes in men's health, specifically reproductive health. Andrologists treat conditions in men that affect the genitalia, such as undescended testes and any diseases or injuries that may affect sexual function or fertility. This specialty is comparable to a gynecologist for women.

Additional tasks that andrologists may perform include harvesting sperm for in-vitro fertilization and performing vasectomies for those who no longer wish to reproduce. Andrologists collaborate with other physicians on health issues such as high blood pressure, heart disease and kidney failure, since those all can affect sexual functionality. An andrologist is different from a urologist in that a urologist treats a broader spectrum of conditions.
