Springleaf Financial, the name under which American General Finance has operated since 2011, operates nationwide rather than in a single state. Springleaf Financial is headquartered in Evansville, Indiana.
Founded in 1920, Springleaf was originally an underwriting company called Interstate Finance Corporation created to assist in sales of Inland Motor Truck vehicles. In the years following, the company expanded its reach to auto loans and other credit services. Ten years later, in 1930, Interstate opened its first branch. As of 2015, Springleaf claims that 67 percent of Americans live within 25 miles of a Springleaf branch. The company completed its initial public offering in 2013 and subsequently appeared on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol "LEAF."
