When a user wishes to redeem his American Express reward points, he needs to select a reward from the catalog available on the American Express website, and click the corresponding Redeem Now button. The user is then prompted for a login ID and password.

After logging in, the user sees the accrued reward points and the name of the reward chosen. The user provides an address where the reward is to be delivered. If no address is specified, the reward is sent to the default billing address of the user. The user checks a box indicating that he read and understood the applicable terms, clicks Continue, and clicks Submit to confirm. The user then enters the card account number and a four-digit number that is printed on the card. Finally, the user clicks Continue to complete the transaction, at the end of which a thank you message appears on the screen, along with a confirmation receipt and remaining points count. It usually takes around 14 days for the reward to be delivered.

American Express reward points do not expire, and each user accrues more reward points through transactions made with supplementary cards by family members. Reward points can be linked to a frequent traveller program.
