Some American Express cards are automatically enrolled in the Rewards program, but cardholders can log in to their account online to verify their current enrollment or enroll eligible cards that are not already part of the program. Certain cards require cardholders to pay a fee in order to join the Membership Rewards program. Membership Rewards points do not expire. In order for cardholders to earn points, they must pay the payment due on their linked card on time. Certain transactions do not qualify to earn points, including the following: cash advances, balance transfers, privileged assets, Express Cash, Corporate Express Cash, purchases of American Express Travelers' Cheques or Gift Cheques, a purchase that is paid for using Rewards points, purchases of prepaid cards or purchases where prepaid cards are reloaded. Additionally, transactions involving card account fees, Membership Rewards program fees and fees for cardholder services do not allow a cardholder to earn points. Points can be purchased at a rate of 1,000 points for $25. However, there are limits to the amount of points a member can purchase, which vary depending on the type of card.
