A comparison conducted in 2014 by TopRetirements.com includes Serendipity, located in Fort Meyers, as one of the most affordable gated communities in Florida for those over the age of 55. Royal Palm Village in Haines City also made the list, as did Gulfstream Harbor in Orlando.
Serendipity is vibrant and friendly with resort-style amenities, according to TopRetirements.com. Rentals and new homes for purchase are set in a lush landscape with a small-town vibe. Royal Palm Village is comprised of manufactured homes set amidst canals, ponds and scenic lakes. Gulfstream Harbor also boasts scenic lakes and surroundings along with resort-style amenities. All three communities offer homes for purchase starting at $60,000.
The comparison study was conducted across 505 communities in all states, with various price points ranging below $100,000, states TopRetirements.com. Some of the logic for the selection includes choosing existing communities with manufactured homes, which are generally less expensive. Amenities and monthly fees were also factors in the comparison.
In a slightly older study from 2012, eight Florida communities under $100,000 made the list, according to 55places.com. The number one spot is awarded to The Villages, which is an independent township for the retirement community. On Top of the World, located in Ocala, and Pelican Preserve of Fort Meyers are also listed in the top three.
