How do you address a package?

Quick Answer

In addition to the required postage, two addresses are required to mail a package: the delivery address and the return address. Both addresses must appear on the same side, with the return address in the upper left corner and the delivery address placed in the center of the package. The return address is needed in case the package is undeliverable.

  1. Add the delivery address

Type or print in pen the delivery address for the package on the longest side of the package. The delivery address is set parallel to the longest edge of the package, to prevent unnecessary flipping of the package. Place the delivery address towards the center of the package for easier reading. The address should contain the name of the recipient, the street address, a suite number if applicable, state, country and zip code, with each element on a separate line.

  2. Add the return address

Type or print the return address on the same side of the package as the delivery address. Place the return address in the upper-left corner of the package, parallel to the delivery address. Include the same elements in the return address as in the delivery address.

  3. Place extra labels

Attach any tracking labels or labels identifying extra services for the package above the delivery address and to the right of the return address.
