St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was founded by entertainer Danny Thomas in 1962. The hospital's mission is to advance the prevention and cure of catastrophic childhood diseases. St. Jude has had a major role in the development and improvement of childhood cancer treatments that have helped significantly raise the survival rate for pediatric cancer patients. The hospital also developed a gene therapy treatment for hemophilia B that eliminates the need for ongoing injections after a single treatment.
St. Jude does not bill families for health services and relies heavily on individual contributions. The hospital also provides financial assistance to families for travel, lodging and dining expenses that they incur when seeking treatment there. St. Jude treats children from all over the U.S., as well as many other countries. As of 2015, operational costs at St. Jude are about $2,000,000 per day. Most of these costs are met by donations from individuals.
