One way to add a business or residential phone number to a do not call list is to go to the National Do Not Call Registry website and register online. Click the Register a Phone Number button for the online form, and submit a phone number for the list. An email address is required for confirmation purposes. Alternatively, call the do not call registry phone number, and follow the instructions.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission operates the national Do Not Call Registry, and submitted phone numbers appear on its list one day after submission. On average, it takes 31 days for sales calls to cease once a number enters the registry. After a phone number is registered, unsolicited sales calls made to the number are considered illegal. Legal exceptions are made for companies that have already established a business relationship with the other party or who have permission to call. Registration does not prohibit calls from charitable organizations, debt collectors or companies doing phone surveys for informational purposes.
Consumers and businesses on the do not call list might receive illegal robocalls that include sales pitches. The FTC recommends hanging up on robocalls without responding to requests of any kind. Call blocking is a good solution for dealing with annoying companies that make illegal sales calls.
