Use these steps to activate a PayPal card.

  1. Navigate to the PayPal website
  2. Use any Web browser to navigate to PayPal's prepaid site section. Click on Activate a Card from the tabs on the home page. This pulls up an Activate Your Card Today box. Activating a card is required before the card can be used to make purchases.

  3. Enter the card number
  4. On this Activate Your Card today page, there are four text boxes, each of which holds four digits. Use the boxes to enter the card number. There are 16 digits altogether. Click Activate Card after entering the number in the boxes.

  5. Follow the prompts
  6. Follow the prompts to complete the activation process. Choose to link a PayPal account to the card, if desired. Under federal law, PayPal is required to obtain a Social Security number, date of birth and verifiable address from people to whom it issues cards. This information is required during the setup process.

Alternatively, call PayPal's prepaid hotline to activate the card via phone. The number is available 24 hours a day. The number to dial, as of 2015, is (866) 753-6440.

For activation of the PayPal Debit MasterCard, which requires special approval, log in to the PayPal account associated with the card, click the My Money Link, click Update next to the card type, and then click Activate Now and follow the prompts to continue activation.
