The DHL in DHL Express comes from the initials of the cofounders' last names: Adrian Dalsey, Larry Hillblom and Robert Lynn. The company was founded on September 25, 1969. By 1971, it had become the first express delivery company that provided international door-to-door service.
DHL Express began by providing delivery service between Honolulu, Hawaii and San Francisco, Calif. One year later, it included Los Angeles, Portland, Ohio, and Guam in its service. The company offered its first international service by opening operations in the Philippines. During the next few years, it expanded to other areas in Asia and the Pacific, such as Japan, Australia and Singapore. In 1998, Deutsche Post bought shares of DHL and, in 2002, it became the majority holder of the company.
