SilverSneakers is a fitness program and benefit in over 65 Medicare Advantage and Supplemental plans, such as AARP’s MedicareComplete through United Healthcare, and the AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan. SilverSneakers, affiliated with 13,000 fitness locations in the United States, offers indoor, outdoor and at-home fitness options, states SilverSneakers.com.

The SilverSneakers Fitness Program, a product of Healthways, provides free memberships at local fitness centers to eligible Medicare recipients. In addition to the fitness club membership with access to all club amenities, a program advisor is assigned to each SilverSneakers member at her club location. Members also receive access to HealthwaysFIT.com, which provides a web-based tool for tracking their fitness efforts and results. HealthwaysFIT also includes information on nutrition, exercise videos and expert advice on exercise and healthy living. According to Healthways, 12 million adults over the age of 65 are active SilverSneakers members.

Plans that include the SilverSneakers fitness benefit vary by state. In Wisconsin, for example, the program is available through Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Humana, UCare, WPS Medicare Companion, and the AARP Medicare supplemental plans. MedicareHealthPlans.com lists other health plans that include the SilverSneakers benefit, such as Coventry Healthcare, HealthSpring, Wellcare, SCAN Health Plan and Windsor Health Plan.
