Zinc oxide cream is a medication that is used to prevent and treat hemorrhoids, skin burns, diaper rash and to protect skin that is irritated because of prolonged moisture exposure. This medication is readily available over the counter in many different forms, such as gel, spray, lotion, ointment, dressing, powder, cream and paste.
Some of the most common topical creams containing zinc oxide are Desitin, Periguard, Medi-Paste, Balmex, Delazinc, Lassars Paste and Prevacare Personal Protective. Zinc oxide creams or medications containing zinc oxide should be used carefully and only be applied to the skin. Ingesting, inhaling or getting zinc oxide cream in the eyes can cause unpleasant symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, fever, cough, chills and stomach pains.
