Winged eyeliner is a makeup application technique used to create a cat-eye effect around the eyes. The eyeliner starts at the inner corner of the eye and follows the lash line until it reaches the outer corner. Then the eyeliner extends slightly past the eye and curves upward.
A makeup artist creates the winged eyeliner look using an eyeliner brush and a gel or cream eyeliner, an eyeliner pencil or liquid eyeliner. Depending on a person's preference and eye shape, the artist applies a thick or thin band of eyeliner against the lash line. The line should taper at the eye's outer corner to produce a triangular shape.
