LaCoste, Polo Ralph Lauren, Brooks Brothers, Izod, Vineyard Vines, Fred Perry, Calvin Klein and Tommy Hilfiger are some of the most well-known polo shirt brands. The polo shirt is one of the most iconic items in menswear fashion and sportswear design.
A men's wardrobe staple for the better part a century, the polo shirt was first worn by French tennis player Jean Rene Lacoste. Tired of the playing tennis in the sport's standard and uncomfortably stiff button-down shirts, Lacoste called upon his background in mechanical engineering to invent pique cotton technology. This woven knit fabric gave the wearer greater range of motion and offered increased breathability. Originally known as the "Lacoste Tennis Shirt," Lacoste first wore it to the U.S. Open in 1926 and started a fashion sensation. The shirt of choice for polo sportsmen, it became internationally known as the polo shirt.
