The wing-collared shirt, a heavily starched formal shirt with a short collar, is meant to be worn with a bow tie underneath a tuxedo or other formal jacket. The shirt's collar tips stand up and point horizontally, resembling wings.
To wear a bow tie with a wing-collared shirt, the wearer simply puts the shirt on and buttons it up before tying the bow tie around the neck. Since the collars of the shirt are short and point up, there is no need for lots of adjusting to get the fit right. Once the bow tie is in place, the shirt is covered with a jacket.
