If the perm has left the curls too tight, the curls need to be conditioned with a heavy conditioning treatment that is rich in moisture. Weighing down the curls helps stretch them out so that they are not as tight. When styling the hair, leave-in conditioner and a serum that fights frizz should be used on a daily basis to help weigh the hair down.
If the curls are smaller than desired, the perm must be redone using larger rods. There are at-home perm kits available, but it is vital to let the hair recover before perming it again to prevent chemical damage. Larger perm rods make the curls softer.
