Backcombing sections of hair is a simple way to start the dreadlocking process; however, proper cleaning and maintenance are also necessary to ensure the dreads set and remain healthy. Any excess moisture and dirt can lead to unpleasant odors.
After washing and completely drying the hair, divide it into sections using rubber bands. Each section should form a 1-inch by 1-inch square on the scalp. Secure each section with a small rubber band.
Use a fine-toothed comb to backcomb each section of hair towards the scalp. This packs the hair together and begins forming the dreadlocks. Secure both ends of the dreadlocks with rubber bands and wax them lightly to help them set. The dreadlocks take around three months to fully set, at which point you can remove the bands.
