While cleaning Converse canvas shoes in the washing machine works well for white and light colors, you may notice some fading with darker or brighter colors. To wash Converse shoes, you need plastic bags, baking soda, white vinegar, a toothbrush, mild detergent and WD-40. Spray starch and bleach are also helpful for cleaning white Converse shoes.
- Prepare the shoes
Remove the shoelaces from your Converse shoes, and stuff the shoes with plastic bags to help them retain their shape while washing.
- Pre-clean the shoes
Mix together a paste of white vinegar and baking soda. Use a toothbrush to scrub the shoes with this paste. If you're cleaning white shoes, add just a drop of bleach to the mixture. Be very stingy with the bleach, since too much can damage the shoes' rubber soles.
- Wash the shoes in the washing machine
Wash the Converse shoes in the washing machine. Use a mild detergent that contains no bleach. To minimize the sound of the shoes bouncing around the machine, it's okay to add some light-colored towels to the wash load.
- Starch and dry the shoes
Pull the shoes out of the washing machine, and set them in the sun to dry. Do not dry them in the dryer, which can ruin the shoes. If you're washing white Converse shoes, give them a little spray of spray starch as the drying process begins.
- Clean the rubber
Dab a little WD-40 on any scuff marks on the rubber of the Converse shoes, and scrub the marks away.
