Alone or mixed with other ingredients, use vinegar as a shampoo, hair conditioner, treatment for itchy scalp and dandruff, and home remedy for head lice. The acetic acid in vinegar balances the alkaline pH of hair care products and maintains healthy hair.
Vinegar rinse removes shampoo and hair styling build-up and closes the cuticle scales covering and protecting the surface of each hair shaft, leaving the hair smoother, shinier and easier to manage. For simple hair rinse, mix 1/4 cup each of water and either apple cider vinegar or distilled white vinegar. Add a tablespoon of honey to clarify and moisturize hair and an egg white for extra shininess. Incorporate 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of olive, almond or coconut oil to combat dryness. Scent the rinse with five to 10 drops of lavender, lemon grass or tea tree essential oil. Combine the rinse ingredients in a container with a lid, and shake well.
Wash hair as usual, using cool to lukewarm water. Apply the rinse, and work it into the scalp and down through the hair. Wait five to 10 minutes before quickly rinsing with cool water, and dry as usual. The vinegar smell dissipates as hair dries. Use vinegar rinse only once or twice a week to avoid drying the hair and scalp.
