How Do I Use Foil When Dying Hair?

To use foil when dying hair, pre-fold the aluminum foil, and lay the hair you wish to be highlighted onto the foil. Apply the highlighting formula to the hair. Check after 20 minutes.

  1. Prepare the foil and hair

Pre-cut and pre-fold the aluminum foil into pieces 4 by 5 inches or larger. The hair should be brushed out and tangle-free. Clip loose hair to keep it out of the way.

  2. Select the hair strands

Use the handle of a tail comb to weave through each section of hair, picking which strands of hair to highlight. Hold the selected strands out at a 90 degree angle from the head. Center the edge of a piece of foil under the strands, as close to the base of the hair as possible. Lay the hair on the foil.

  3. Apply the highlight mixture

Apply the highlight mixture to the hair on the foil, working it down the strand. Keep the product about 1/8 inch away from the edge of the foil. Fold the bottom edge of the foil up to the top edge. Don't press on the foil where the mixture is on the hair. Gently fold the sides of the fold inward about an inch.

  4. Check the hair

Check the hair after 20 minutes to see the color development. If the hair has lightened enough, remove the foil wraps in the same order as applied, and rinse the mixture from hair.
