To untangle a necklace, remove the big knots first. Place the necklace on a flat surface, and apply baby oil to the knots. Use a straight pin to tease out the tangles, clean away the baby oil, and hang up the necklace to prevent future tangles.
- Remove big knots
If the necklace is in a jumble, start by gently untangling any big knots. Never pull or yank the chain, as this can break the necklace.
- Set the necklace down
Place the necklace flat on a nonporous surface, such as glass.
- Apply baby oil
Dip a cotton swab in baby oil until it is damp but not dripping. Rub this over the surface of the knots until the necklace is slippery. Dampen the cotton swab again, if necessary, to ensure the necklace is saturated with baby oil.
- Push at the knots
Use the pads of your fingers to push at the knots and loosen them.
- Use a straight pin
Poke a straight pin into the edge of a knot. Gently pull until the knot loosens. Continue working at the edges of the knot, heading in toward the center, until it is completely loose. If necessary, use a second straight pin to hold onto the chain while working with the first pin.
- Clean the necklace
Dampen a soft cloth in jewelry cleaner. Rub it along the surface of the necklace to remove the baby oil.
