Locks of Love accepts most hair donations in a ponytail or braid of 10 inches or longer. Curly hair can be stretched to meet this requirement, and layered hair is accepted so long as the shortest layer is 10 inches long. Locks of Love accepts dyed or permed hair so long as the hair has not been bleached, since bleached hair does not withstand the manufacturing process.
Because Locks of Love has specific requirements for hair donations, people who wish to donate hair should seek out salons that are familiar with the donation guidelines. Donors must send the hair as a ponytail or braid; hair that has been swept off the floor of the salon is not acceptable, nor is hair that has been shaved directly from the head; instead, the donation hair must be cut off prior to shaving. Locks of Love accepts donations of gray hair or hair shorter than 10 inches, but since this hair cannot be used to make hairpieces for children, the organization sells it to offset manufacturing costs. Locks of Love cannot accept wigs, hair extensions, synthetic hair or dreadlocks. Hair donors should ensure that their hair is clean and completely dry before mailing.
