To treat a dry scalp, prepare it by exfoliating the skin, then select a home remedy treatment. Follow up with an over-the-counter product if the problem persists. Treating a dry scalp takes between five to 15 minutes and requires baking soda, lemon juice, yogurt, essential oils and, possibly, over-the-counter dry scalp products.
- Exfoliate the scalp
Prepare the scalp for treatment by removing dead skin cells with baking soda, which is a natural exfoliant. Mix a paste of baking soda and water. Rub it directly into the scalp. Let it sit for 10 minutes. Rinse it completely with warm water.
- Treat dandruff with lemon juice
If the dry scalp is the result of dandruff, treat it with a lemon juice mask. Lemon juice's antiseptic properties help control dandruff. Mix 1 tablespoon of lemon juice to 1/4 cup of yogurt. Apply this to the scalp, and leave on for five minutes. Rinse, and follow up with regular shampooing.
- Massage essential oil into the scalp
Add three drops of tea tree oil to 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Alternatively, warm up 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. After shampooing and conditioning, apply the oil to the scalp, and massage for one to two minutes. Rinse out with warm water. Essential oils condition the scalp.
- Try over-the-counter products
If home remedies do not alleviate the dryness, look for over-the-counter products containing coal tar, salicylic acid, lactic acid or urea. These ingredients control the regeneration of skin cells, which alleviates dryness. Work the product into the scalp, and follow up with a moisturizer.
