Tory Burch is an American fashion designer who is the Chairman and CEO of the Tory Burch fashion label. Burch started the company in 2004 with the opening of her first store in Manhattan, and it has since grown into a globally-recognized brand worth an estimated $3.5 billion.
Burch was born and raised in Valley Forge, Penn., just outside of Philadelphia. She attended the University of Pennsylvania, graduating with a degree in art history. She moved to New York soon after, where she originally worked in marketing and public relations for many of the top names in fashion, including Ralph Lauren and Vera Wang. She also worked as a fashion copywriter for several famous publications, most notably "Harper's Bazaar."
Burch began designing clothing at home after her ex-husband, Chris Burch, gave her two million dollars before launching her flagship store in Manhattan's fashionable NoLita district in 2004. The following year, she launched her website, which soon generated even more success after Oprah Winfrey declared her to be the next big fashion designer.
In only 10 years, Burch grew her business from one small retail outlet to a global company with more than 120 stores. The company's designs are available in its own stores and in more than 3,000 other shops around the world.
