Toothpaste contains many ingredients that may cause skin irritation, burning, redness and peeling on the face. Toothpaste has been used to clear acne, as it has certain ingredients that cause pimples to dry; however, it is not proven more effective than the safer, conventional treatments.

Most commercial brands of toothpaste contain baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, alcohol, menthol, triclosan and other essential oils that help to deter acne breakouts. Baking soda is an effective alternative face scrub that helps with breakouts. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid also help to prevent breakouts. According to Dr. Neal Schultz, using toothpaste as an acne cleanser was most likely discovered by someone who had a pimple on the corner of their mouth, where toothpaste tends fall while brushing teeth.
