According to Organics, fluoride is not needed to protect teeth from cavities. The large layer of protection that fluoride was thought to provide is actually only 1/10,000 of the width of a strand of hair. Simply put, fluoride is unnecessary for healthy teeth. The Fluoride Action Network states that residents of the United States consume more chlorinated water than the rest of the world combined. Studies have shown that there is not a significant difference between the amount of tooth decay in areas that fluoridate water and areas that do not.
People can suffer from symptoms due to overexposure to fluoride. A recent national survey conducted by the CDC found that about 40 percent of American teens suffer from dental fluorosis. In some areas, the problem affects as many as 70 to 80 percent.
Fluorosis is a defect that affects tooth enamel and is caused when fluoride interferes with tooth-forming cells. The symptoms can include streaks and cloudy spots or in advanced cases, brown stains or tooth erosion.
