To create a formal French twist, divide the hair from ear to ear over the top of the head. Backcomb the back half of the top section to create a bump near the crown. Smooth the top of the bump, and secure near the crown with bobby pins.

Next, backcomb the back of the hair. Push all of the hair to one side, and create a seam with bobby pins. Fold the hair over this seam, and twist. Make sure the twist hides the seam and the bobby pins securing the bump.

Finally, take the remaining hair from the front, and brush it toward the back. Cover the area where the twist meets the bump.

To style a casual French twist, pull all the hair back into a ponytail at the center of the head. Hold onto the base of the ponytail with one hand, and grasp the center of the tail with the other hand. Start pulling the center of the tail up while twisting. Use the other hand to guide loose ends into the twist. Pin into place.
