How Do You Tie a Bow Tie?

Tie a bow tie by wrapping one end around the other and tying a knot. This takes only a few minutes and requires a bow tie and two hands.

  1. Position the bow tie around your neck

Lay the bow tie over your neck with the sides pointing down. The right side needs to be a few inches longer than the left side.

  2. Tie a knot

Thread the left side over the right side, under it and over it again. The long side should now be on the left side.

  3. Fold the short side over

Fold the short or right side over horizontally into a bow shape. The folded rounded part of the side needs to be on the right side, and the bow-shaped end needs to be to the left side.

  4. Fold over the long side

Fold the long side over the short side so that it is hanging down vertically. Fold the rounded part of the long side so that it is in a bow shape. Bring the folded long side under and behind the bow, and pass it through the loop behind the short side.

  5. Tighten the knot

Gently pull the sides to tighten the knot. Make sure that you keep the knot centered as you pull it tight.
