A few stores that carry the Birkenstock brand are Nordstrom, Famous Footwear, Natural Comfort Footwear and the Walkabout Shop. Some retail outlets may not have the brand available, depending on one's location and the retailer's supply.
The Birkenstock family has been in shoe production for more than 230 years. In 1897, Konrad Birkenstock invented the contoured sole of the shoe in Germany. Margo Fraser is the founder of Birkenstock USA and discovered the shoes on one of her many trips to Germany. She began importing the German shoes to the United States in 1966, and they have grown in popularity ever since.
While some consumers may not appreciate the aesthetics of the shoe, there are many health benefits to wearing them. Since the shoe is contoured to the shape of the foot, there is an accurate distribution of weight and arch support. The toe bar in the shoe allows the toes to grip and flex naturally which helps to exercise the leg, stimulate circulation and maintains balance. The shoe has a deep heel cup which utilizes the body's natural padding for providing stability. All of the these factors work together to ensure the spine and legs stay in alignment by forcing the correct bones to bear the weight of the body.
