Sisterlocks hairstyles are a modern version of the traditional locks worn by Rastafarians. Ebony Magazine states that unlike traditional locks created by rolling or matting a medium to large amount of hair with a balm or wax, sisterlocks use much smaller sections of hair and require a special tool.
Sisterlocks require a certified stylist, and they're also more complicated and expensive to begin and maintain than traditional locks. According to Ebony Magazine, sisterlocks can take 24 hours or more to start and cost $500 to $800. Maintenance is around $100 per visit. For traditional locks, expect two to three hours and a fee of $50 to $100, along with self-taught maintenance.
