Reduce the appearance of pores with maintenance regimens that include cleansing, exfoliating, using Retinols, priming before makeup application and utilizing clay masks. An effective daily regimen takes roughly 10 minutes and requires a cleanser, exfoliating scrub and makeup primer. Retinols and clay masks should be used one to two times a week.
- Cleanse the face
Use a cleanser that contains salicylic acid, which unclogs the pores and reduces sebum on the surface of the skin. Cleanse twice a day, once in the morning before applying makeup and once at night after removing makeup.
- Exfoliate the skin
Use an exfoliating mask or an exfoliating tool, such as Spa Sonic, to remove dead skin cells that get trapped in the pores. Apply an exfoliating mask three times per week. Do not use an exfoliating mask on the same day as using Retinols.
- Apply primer before makeup
Apply a thin layer of the makeup primer with your fingertips or a sponge, allowing it to set before applying makeup. Apply primer to fill in bumps and holes created by enlarged pores. If you have oily or combination skin, look for a primer that reduces shine. If you have dry skin, apply a moisturizing primer.
- Use Retinols at night
Retinols are exfoliants derived from vitamin A. They typically require a dermatologist's prescription because they are more powerful than over-the-counter exfoliants. Use a Retinol such as Retin-A once a week at night.
- Apply a clay mask
Look for a clay mask that includes Kaolin clay, which unclogs the pores and reduces surface oil on your skin. Use the clay mask one to two times a week in the morning.
