In Western cultures, there is not considered to be a single correct side for a nostril piercing to be placed, so whether the piercing goes on the right or left side is up to the individual. In some cultures, such as those that follow Ayurvedic medical traditions, it is preferred to place the piercing on the left side of the body.
Nostril piercing has been a traditional practice in a variety of cultural traditions, including the Australian Aboriginal and Hindu cultures. Some parts of the world, such as Afghanistan, practice nostril piercing on both sides of the nose. Nostril piercing is most commonly practiced on women, although some cultural traditions include men in the practice.
