Hairstylist Chris Maclachlan recommends shorter styles for gray hair. Gray hair is harder to maintain because the strands are thicker and stiffer than other shades, so long gray hair can tend to look unkempt or stringy. Longer hair styles on older women may also make their faces appear gaunt.
Unlike brown or red, gray hair is a cool color, which means that it can wash out lighter skin tones. For this reason, it may be beneficial to add lowlights to a gray hair style. Lowlights that frame the face help define the cheekbones and other features, lending the illusion of color to the skin.
