Rimmel London is a cosmetics company that Eugene Rimmel and his father founded in 1834. The House of Rimmel began as a perfumery and eventually evolved into a cosmetics manufacturer.
Eugene Rimmel developed colorful cosmetics, and he branched out to create other hygiene products, such as mouth rinses and pomades. He sold his line of perfumes, fragrances and other goods out of a shop on Regent Street in London. After he passed away in 1887, his two sons took over the thriving family business.
Over the years, the company went through many changes in ownership. Robert and Rose Caplin bought Rimmel after the end of World War II, and the company saw several different owners take over in the 1970s and 1980s. Coty bought Rimmel London in 1996. As of 2015, Rimmel London sells its cosmetics in more than 40 countries around the world.
In 2001, Rimmel London began a partnership with supermodel and London native Kate Moss, choosing her to be the face of the company. The partnership between the model and Rimmel London continues as of 2015, and Moss currently has her own line of lipsticks for the brand. Zooey Deschanel and Georgia May Jagger have also appeared in advertising campaigns for the company.
