To get rid of red acne marks, use gentle products, an exfoliant such as alpha- or beta-hydroxy acid, daily sunscreen and find skincare products containing cell-communicating ingredients and antioxidants. As red marks are not related to overproduction of melanin like dark marks, avoid using skin-lightening products.
Use gentle products that are free of known irritants, and do not use harsh scrubs that can tear the skin. Irritating the skin can worsen red marks.
Use a skincare product daily that contains alpha-hydroxy acid, such as glycolic acid, or beta-hydroxy acid, for example salicylic acid. Either acid exfoliates the surface skin evenly. The advantages of beta-hydroxy acid include penetrating into the pore and dissolving pore clogs that lead to future breakouts. Salicylic acid also acts as an anti-inflammatory agent, reducing irritation and redness.
Use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or greater on your face every day. Look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen that blocks UV rays. Exposure to UV light slows healing and causes skin irritation. Consider using a tinted moisturizer or a foundation that contains broad-spectrum sun protection, as this helps cover red marks as they heal.
Cell-communicating ingredients, such as retinol or niacinamide, help heal skin faster. Antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, help protect skin from future damage, allowing it to heal. Look for skincare products containing both antioxidants and skin communicating ingredients.
Once the marks fade, continue with these steps to prevent future discoloration from forming. Patience is required, as fading does not occur immediately.
