Dermatologists recommend using products with benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid and retinols to treat whiteheads, according to Daily Makeover. Applying a product with 5 percent of solubilized benzoyl peroxide after washing the face treats the acne-causing bacteria.
As with all forms of acne, whiteheads can also be treated with a healthy skin care regimen, explains Daily Makeover. Begin by washing your face no more than twice a day with warm water and a gentle cleanser, making sure to regularly change any towels or washcloths to prevent spreading bacteria. Over the course of the day, avoid touching your face, don't pick at your whiteheads, and try not to use makeup that irritates your skin. Once you have a cleansing routine in place, begin trying acne treatment products, using only one new product at a time after cleaning your face. Follow all product instructions carefully. If you notice a bad reaction, stop using the product immediately, and give your skin at least a week to recover.
Another option is to use a sonic cleansing system to exfoliate any dead skin that has collected, states Daily Makeover. If you do not notice a change in your skin after these steps, consider making an appointment to see a local dermatologist.
